FAQ

Medicare is a federal health insurance program primarily for people aged 65 or older. You may also qualify if you are under 65 with certain disabilities or conditions like End-Stage Renal Disease.

  • Part A: Hospital Insurance
  • Part B: Medical Insurance
  • Part C (Medicare Advantage): All-in-one plans that include Parts A and B, and often Part D.
  • Part D: Prescription Drug Coverage.

You can enroll during your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP), which starts three months before your 65th birthday, includes your birthday month, and ends three months after. There are also Special Enrollment Periods (SEP) and the Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) from October 15 to December 7.

Original Medicare (Parts A and B) covers hospital and medical services but doesn’t include prescription drugs, dental, or vision care. Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans are offered by private companies and may include additional benefits like drug coverage, dental, and vision, with a network of providers.

The costs vary depending on the coverage you choose. Part A is usually premium-free if you’ve worked and paid Medicare taxes. Part B has a monthly premium, as do most Part C (Medicare Advantage) and Part D plans. You may also have deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance.

A Medigap plan helps cover out-of-pocket costs like copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles that Original Medicare doesn’t cover. It’s a good option if you have Original Medicare and want to limit your expenses.

Medicare covers a wide range of services, but not everything. Original Medicare doesn’t cover routine dental, vision, hearing aids, or long-term care. You may want to consider a Medicare Advantage plan or a supplemental policy for broader coverage.

If you don’t enroll during your Initial Enrollment Period and you don’t qualify for a Special Enrollment Period, you may have to pay late enrollment penalties. This could increase your premiums for Part B and Part D.

Yes, you can change your Medicare plan during the Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) from October 15 to December 7. You may also qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) if certain life events occur, such as moving or losing other health coverage. Medicare Advantage plan members can also switch plans during the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (January 1 to March 31).
